Sarkantyús verbunk / Márk Rózsavölgyi / arr. Dirk van der Niet (Clarinet and Concert Band)   I
harmonie en accordeon

Sarkantyús verbunk is originally a short work for clarinet and piano. Influences of Eastern European folk music are clearly audible. Márk Rózsavölgyi (1787-1848, birth name Mark Rosenthal) was a Hungarian composer and violinist. He is called 'the father of the Czardas'. Rózsavölgyi was the son of a poor merchant of Eastern European Jewish descent. In 1812 he was appointed conductor of the orchestra of the German Theater in Pest. In the 1840s he formed his own orchestra and in May 1846 he performed with this orchestra for Franz Liszt. He used some of Rózsavölgyi's melodies in his own Hungarian Rhapsodies (Nos. 8 and 12). Rózsavölgyi died in relative poverty in Pest and was buried there in the Jewish cemetery.

Ave Maria / A. Dvorak / arr. Matteo Firmi (Euphonium and Concert Band)  I
harmonie

Dvorak composed this work with the traditional liturgical text in 1877, for low voice with organ accompaniment, while staying at his friend Alois Gobl in Sychrov Castle. He dedicated the composition to his wife Anna, who performed it on July 26 in the chapel of the Castle, accompanied by Dvorak on the organ. This arrangement of Matteo Firmi is ideal for smaller bands.

Concerto for Trumpet opus 18 / Oskar Böhme / arr. by Dirk van der Niet (Trumpet and Concert Band)   I
harmonie en accordeon

Oskar Böhme was born in Potschappel, a small town near Dresden, Germany. He studied trumpet and composition in the Leipzig Conservatory of Music until graduating in 1885. From 1894-1896 he played in the Budapest Opera Orchestra and then moved to St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1897. Böhme played cornet for 24 years in the Mariinsky Theatre, turned to teaching at a music school on Vasilievsky Island in St. Petersburg for nine further years, from 1921-1930, and then returned to opera with the Leningrad Drama Theatre until 1934. In 1934, however, the Great Terror began under Joseph Stalin and in 1936 a committee was established to oversee the arts in Soviet Russia. According to its anti-foreign policies, Böhme was exiled to Orenburg on account of his German heritage. It is said that he died there in 1938, though he was also said to be seen working on the Turkmenistan Canal in 1941. Böhme composed 46 known works, of which his Trompetensextett in E-flat minor for brass sextet and Trumpet Concerto (Op. 18) are the best known. He wrote in the Romantic style, primarily works for trumpet and brass instruments in general. While, as a consequence of his exile, his works were neglected during the Stalinist era, Böhme is increasingly being rediscovered.

Concertino opus 26 / Carl Maria von Weber / arr. by Dirk van der Niet (Clarinet and Concert Band)   I
harmonie en accordeon

The Concertino for clarinet and orchestra in E flat major was written in 1811. The Clarinet at that time was still a very new instrument. Von Weber composed the concertino for Heinrich Bärmann, one of the most accomplished clarinetists of the day, and used the clarinets wide tonal and dynamic range to the full extent. Like most concertos it consists of three movements: Adagio ma non troppo, Andante, and Allegro. The king of Bavaria, who was present at the premiere, was very enthousiast. He commissioned from Weber two full-scale clarinet concerti. These works, together with the Concertino, still are among the most beloved works for clarinet and orchestra.

Albinoni's Adagio / arr. by Joop van Eck (Concert Band with organ ad lib.)   I
harmonie en orgel ad lib.

Tomaso Giovanni Albinoni (1671 – 1751) was a Venetian Baroque composer. His parents were well-to-do and unlike many of his contemporaries could devote himself entirely to music. Remarkably enough, his name largely survived because of the Adagio in g minor for organ and strings, while later it was established that this work that was published in 1958 by Remo Giazotto, was written by Giazotto himself. The Adagio can performed as well with organ as without organ. The parts include 'little notes' thatmust be played when it is performed without organ. When played with with organ the ' little notes ' can at will be left out or be played. In the organ part also 'little notes' are provided: the pizzicato notes of the double bass. In the absence of a double bass the organ can provide these notes.

Reine de Musette is a very popular work bij the french composer Jean Peyronnin. On youtube you can find numerous recordings. Strange enough it turns out to be very difficult to find further information about the composition or the composer, who died in 1948. On a forum on the internet there is a message from François Ravez : Hi, I just would like to remind that 'Reine de Musette' was in fact composed by Gusti Malha. It was sold for 40 francs to Jean Peyronnin who needed a few tunes to be recorded as a composer in the french society of authors and compositors of music (SACEM: Société des Auteurs et Compositeurs de Musique). You can't perceive royalties if you are not a member of this society............
