A composition inspired by 'The Baltic Road'. This event took place on August 23, 1989. More than a million people joined forces to form a 600 km chain in the three Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Among them was the preacher of St. Joseph's Church, Romans Grantovskis. He stood with members of the municipality of Brunava near the border between Latvia and Lithuania. The Baltic Road was the most prominent part of "the Singing Revolution" in which the people of the Baltic states protested the domination of the Soviet Union. Ultimately, this led to the desired independence of the Baltic States in the early 1990s.

The original sketches of this unfinished work are by Modeste Mussorgsky (1839-1881). Night on the Bare Mountain became known becuase of the orchestral version by Nikolai Rimski-Korsakovs from 1886. The title refers to Russian folklore: on St. John's evening (June 23rd, the longest day or 'midsummer evening'), Tchernobog (Satan) and his witches, sorcerers and evil spirits gather on the Bald Mountain near Kiev.

Giovanni Gabrieli lived in the second half of the sixteenth century. He worked in Venice as a composer, organist and priest. His compositions were groundbreaking and he was a pioneer for the baroque. He died in 1612 and left behind an exceptional oeuvre of instrumental music, amongst which canzonas, sonatas and motets. One of his innovations is the polychoral style. This Canzona à 12 is a threechoral work.

The oratorio Samson is about Samson's fight against the Philistines. Chained and blind he weeps over the treachery of his wife Delilah and the loss of his eyesight. Let the bright Seraphim is sung by an anonymous Jewish woman, after Samson's destruction of the philistine Temple of Dagan. It calls opun the angels to honour Samson.

George Friedrich Händel composed a large number of works in all genres: opera, oratorio, Cantata, Chamber music and large orchestral works, in that time called concerto grosso. His opus 6 consisted of 12 concerti grossi. The Minuet Varié is a part the 5th concert. This festive, varied minuet has become very popular.
